Liverpool are expecting Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to be an option in more than one position next season.
That’s according to the Liverpool Echo who claim the Liverpool will now keep the midfielder for 2022/23.
Citing ‘Anfield insiders,’ the Echo report that there are currently ‘no plans’ to sell Oxlade-Chamberlain. Owing to the club’s desire to wait until 2023 for a new midfielder, they’re happy to keep him around.
In fact, it’s even claimed that the 28-year-old is still seen as a ‘valuable member of the squad.’ Jurgen Klopp is reportedly counting on the midfielder to play a role in ‘multiple positions’ as Liverpool look to defend their crowns in the domestic cups.
Ox had looked to be on his way out of Anfield. But it seems he could now leave on a free transfer next summer instead.
Another chance to go out on a high for Ox
Given that Liverpool seem determined to wait a year for their preferred midfield addition, this is probably a smart move.
Klopp’s unwillingness to give Oxlade-Chamberlain game time at the end of last season was a little puzzling. The England international had done well around the turn of the year and offers Liverpool something slightly different.
But Klopp wasn’t interested. Ox sat on the bench, or more-often-than-not missed out of the squad completely from March onwards.
In that respect, this would seem like a strange change of heart. With a year left on his contract, it looked for all the world like we’d seen the last of the man signed for £35m in a Liverpool shirt.
It would be some turnaround if he could convince Klopp that he can do a consistent job in any position. Yes, Liverpool could do with a midfield addition, but they’re unlikely to lose anyone from last season’s cohort either.
That means that the same players who were ahead of Ox last season, will be ahead of him next season too.
But the former Arsenal man is ever-popular within the squad. If he can somehow gain his place back in the Reds eleven, he can still go out on a high next summer.
