Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Liverpool to go after Jude Bellingham after signing Darwin Nunez.
Speaking on TalkSPORT this morning, Agbonlahor said that while he approved of the Nunez signing, Liverpool need to sign some midfielders.
“Nunez is a top player and he will improve and get even better, but Liverpool need midfielders,” said the former England striker.
“Thiago has injury problems, Henderson, his legs are going to start going a bit now he’s into his thirties, they need two midfielders.
“Even someone like Bellingham would fit in perfectly at Liverpool. Defence they’re fine they’ve got enough cover, goalkeeper they’ve got enough cover. I feel like two centre midfielders and Nunez and they’ll be back next season challenging Man City.”
Sounds like a plan!
Bellingham more likely next year
Liverpool’s interest in signing Bellingham has been mooted for some time. Just last week, The Athletic re-confirmed that the 18-year-old is ‘widely admired’ by The Reds.
However, it’s also noted that it would be ‘tough’ to prise him away from Borussia Dortmund this summer. The price for doing so would reportedly be ‘in excess’ of £80m.
Liverpool are about to drop a similar sized fee on bringing Nunez to Anfield from Benfica.
It’s a surprise to see Liverpool going so boldly into the transfer market for a change. But having stumped up, or being on the verge of stumping up, such a big fee, there’s slim chance of them doing it twice in the same summer.
More likely is that Liverpool hold off on Bellingham until next year. The teenager has already indicated that he’ll be staying at Dortmund next season, so all signs point to that at this stage.
Midfielder still on the menu
It could be that The Reds do still go in for a midfielder. With James Milner now signed up for another year, the urgency perhaps isn’t quite what it was.
But the interest is clearly there. Liverpool have just missed out on Aurelien Tchouameni to Real Madrid. They were seemingly willing to fork out a big fee for him though.
A player like Gavi could still be an option for Liverpool and would cost more or less half what Bellingham would.
Jurgen Klopp’s second revolution at Anfield looks to now be well underway. Having already shocked Reds fans by going big for Nunez, who’s to say John Henry won’t surprise us all and sign off on another massive cheque this summer.
