Liverpool have been given hope that their reported pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Gavi is still alive.

As per a report in The Athletic, Barcelona’s contract discussions with the teenager are becoming ‘increasingly difficult.’

It had previously been reported that a new deal for Gavi was more or less sorted. Liverpool, who had been claimed to be admirers of the player, were said to have ‘dropped out’ of the running as this become clear.

However, no official announcement has been forthcoming and it appears things aren’t quite so straightforward after all.

Gavi’s situation looking precarious

Gavi has shot to stardom this season. At the start of the campaign he didn’t have a single appearance in senior football to his name.

Understandable, given that he turned seventeen just 10 days before Barcelona kicked off their La Liga season.

Now, he’s a fully fledged first-teamer having played 47 times for the Blaugrana. He also now has eight caps for Spain and scored his first goal for his country earlier in the week.

All of this has reportedly courted the attention of Liverpool. What makes things interesting is that Gavi is claimed to have a release clause in his contract to the tune of around £43m.

While that looked impossible at the start of the season, it now looks like being a potential steal. The youngster also has a single year remaining on his deal.

There were even suggestions that the reason for his delay in signing a deal was due to Liverpool’s interest in him. If he can’t find a resolution with Barcelona, he could even be available for nothing in a year’s time.

Liverpool are on the lookout for reinforcements in the midfield. After missing out on Aurelien Tchouameni, hope remains alive that they still may have the opportunity to tempt one of the most promising talents in world football to Anfield.
