'Just amazing': Joel Matip blown away by the 'brilliant' performance of 27-year-old Liverpool teammate last night

Joel Matip was thrilled with Takumi Minamino’s performance for Liverpool last night, describing it as ‘brilliant.’

The Reds came from behind to beat Southampton, with Minamino getting the all important equaliser. Speaking to LFCTV GO after the game, Matip praised his teammate for his goalscoring display.

“Just amazing, his whole game he (Minamino) was there in every second he was always an option, always a threat for the opponent,” said Matip. “He did brilliant.”

Matip himself made sure the three points came back to Anfield with a headed winner in the second-half.

Liverpool back-ups show their quality

There were no doubt a few worried faces from Liverpool supporters upon seeing the team news last night.

Remove regular starters Alisson Becker, Matip and Diogo Jota, and the starting eleven had a combined 51 Premier League starts this season.

7 Greatest Premier League Managers of All Time

You wouldn’t have known it though. The Reds selected looked hungry and fresh as they wiped out Southampton’s early lead with relative ease.

Some of the link-up play around the box was excellent, and the front three of Minamino, Jota and Roberto Firmino looked amazingly slick.

It’s probably too late now for those lesser-seen faces to make a claim for a place in the Champions League final team. Jurgen Klopp will likely already know his eleven to face Real Madrid.

Regardless, a few, most notably Minamino himself, may have convinced the manager that they can be options next season.

Perhaps Klopp will turn to one or two on the final game of the season this weekend. With Liverpool still in with a shout of the title, there’s still time for someone like Taki to make themselves an unlikely hero.
