Gary Lineker reacted on Twitter as Liverpool took the Premier League title race to the very final day of the season. The Reds beat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s.
Jurgen Klopp essentially named a second-string side against Southampton tonight – it was a gamble he had to take. Liverpool are chasing the Quadruple, after all, and had an exhausted first-team after their 120 minutes against Chelsea in the FA Cup final at the weekend.
Klopp trusted his squad players to deliver, though. Liverpool needed a win to keep the pressure on Manchester City to the final day and they delivered – even after going behind.
Takumi Minamino fired in a wonderful equaliser that once again showed his quality. The Japan international somehow delivers despite having absolutely no momentum. Joel Matip then forced a second-half winner that gave Liverpool three points.
They’re now just one solitary point behind City with one game to play. It goes to the final day as the Reds host Wolves and City host Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa.
So there’s excitement in the air. Gary Lineker is feeling it as the Premier League comes to its conclusion – there’s an awful lot to play for.
Premier League title race goes to final day
It will be a tense one. Liverpool need to count on Villa to get anything at the Etihad while beating a good Wolves side at Anfield. Let’s be honest, it probably isn’t going the Reds’ way.
But they’ve given themselves a chance and anything can happen. Much like three years ago, Liverpool just need to win their game and hope that the stars align the right way this time.
There are two games left this season and should luck favour Liverpool, they’ll lift the biggest trophies in club football one after the other. They made sure there’s a chance with tonight’s win – now let’s see what happens.
