Virgil van Dijk gives instant reaction to Liverpool's win over Southampton as title race goes to matchday 38

Virgil van Dijk Tweeted his instant reaction to Joel Matip scoring the winning goal for Liverpool against Southampton tonight.

Liverpool rotated heavily against Southampton tonight as Jurgen Klopp left out virtually every first XI star. They were exhausted after 120 minutes in the FA Cup final three days ago, after all.

The Reds somehow took the fight to Southampton despite the changes, though. Liverpool squeezed a 2-1 win out of the Saints – a result that takes the title race to the very last day.

Virgil van Dijk instantly Tweeted his love for Joel Matip in the wake of the win, after he scored the winning goal. He had to trust his teammates on this one and they duly delivered.

What a moment it was. Matip didn’t really know much about it, admittedly, but somehow found the far corner with his head. We’ll take it.

Klopp took such a massive gamble here with his squad rotation but it was a necessary one. The only way Liverpool can compete for the Quadruple is by trusting their entire squad and it paid off tonight.

Takumi Minamino’s equaliser shows that best. He’s a player who delivered consistently in both cup competitions but rarely gets Premier League chances – in fact, this was his first start of the season. To grab an emphatic and important goal like that shows the depth in this squad.

As does Matip popping up with the winner. Liverpool have an incredible knack of finding goals from wherever they can – this was a fine example of that.

Attention now turns to Sunday and whether Klopp will gamble on his best possible XI. Van Dijk, for instance, went off injured in the cup final and Liverpool may want to rest him for the Champions League final. You can say the same with Mohamed Salah.

At least we know that whoever Klopp puts his faith in, they’ll deliver on Sunday.
