Report: Liverpool ready to battle Man City for 20-year-old striker who scored cup final hat-trick this season

Liverpool are monitoring the progress of 20-year-old Benfica striker Henrique Araujo.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who claim that the young forward has been ‘followed for some time’ by Liverpool.

Interest in Araujo is said to be fierce though, with Manchester City and Barcelona are also reportedly keeping tabs on him.

Benfica reportedly have ‘no intention’ of letting him leave. Araujo recently signed a deal with the Portuguese club to keep him in Lisbon until 2024.

Araujo impressing at Benfica

Araujo could be the latest off the world-renowned production line that is the Benfica academy. Having scored an impressive 17 goals in 33 games for the club’s second team this season, he made his first-team debut in February.

The forward caught the eye in the final of this seasons prestigious UEFA Youth League tournament. Up against another fabled academy – that of RB Salzburg, Araujo scored a hat-trick as the Eagles ran out 6-0 winners.

That outstanding performance came just two weeks ago. By which time the 20-year-old had already racked up five appearances for the team who Liverpool knocked out of the Champions League, scoring once.

Araujo also has two goals in five games for Portugal U21. If Benfica can manage to keep hold of him, he looks like he could be an option to step into the shoes of the likely departing Darwin Nunez.

The Portuguese youngster looks to be a classic penaly box predator with excellent movement and finishing ability.

Anybody coming through the ranks at Benfica is usually worth keeping an eye on. Let’s see where Araujo ends up.
