Benfica are looking to sell reported Liverpool target Darwin Nunez as early as possible into this summer’s transfer window.
That’s according to The Telegraph, who claim that the Portuguese club are looking to ‘secure a hefty fee’ for their star striker.
It’s claimed that Benfica will look for a resolution ‘early in the window.’ Several Premier League clubs are mentioned as being possible destinations for the Uruguayan.
Heading for the exit
It seems that after near-constant speculation since joining Benfica in 2020, Nunez will finally leave the club this summer.
Many clubs could be on the look-out for a striker in the upcoming window. One of those could well be Liverpool.
There is deep uncertainty about the futures of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah in particular.
Meanwhile, Divock Origi looks almost certain to leave the club, too. All that could mean that Jurgen Klopp is in need of a goalscorer in his squad.
Aside from the near-impossibility of signing Erling Haaland, Nunez looks like the best bet at the moment.
He has 26 goals for Benfica this season. Those kind of numbers will be hard to translate into goals in the Premier League. But as the impact of Luis Diaz at Liverpool has shown, it is possible to make the jump from Portugal to England look easy.
The Daily Star reported in October that Liverpool are one of the teams interested in Nunez. O Jogo then reported via Sport Witness that Nunez would cost any team upwards of £55m this summer, with Jurgen Klopp’s side ready to make their move in the summer.
But that potential fee isn’t one to be taken lightly. Liverpool can’t afford to get a deal for that amount of money wrong. If they do pull the trigger on the 22-year-old, it will be because they think he has the potential to be a truly special player.
