Robertson says one Liverpool player ‘set the tone’ against Manchester United, Reds ‘fed off his energy’

Andy Robertson says one teammate ‘set the tone’ in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Manchester United on Tuesday evening. The Reds ran riot at Anfield.

Liverpool were magnificent against Manchester United for the second time this season. They couldn’t quite match their 5-0 win at Old Trafford but we’ll take 4-0 – 9-0 over two games is a dream come true.

The Reds were brilliant from front the back, with every player on the pitch playing their part. Some were clear standouts – Thiago, in particular, earned praise for running the game. Mohamed Salah was outstanding, of course, with two goals and an assist.

Andy Robertson made sure to pick out one other Liverpool player with his post-match thoughts, though. He believes Jordan Henderson ‘set the tone’ for the side and it’s something they used to dominate United.

“Hendo set the tone [in the] first five, 10 minutes with his pressing and with his high energy, and I think everyone just kind of followed suit,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“That’s what a captain does, and Hendo’s done it many a time for us and he did it again. I think we all just fed off his energy.”

It was exactly that kind of performance from Henderson and it’s why he remains such a key part of this Liverpool team. The captain was chasing back, pressing high, pushing between the lines, drifting wide to swap with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold – he was everywhere.

And that’s exactly what Liverpool needed. They overran United in midfield, outworked them across the pitch. Henderson was a huge part of that and his counter-pressing, in particular, was simply elite.
