Liverpool’s 25-and-under XI is already outstanding and could well dominate over the next five years. The Reds have built their team well.
Liverpool have one of the best XIs in world football right now. That is, after all, why they’ve been so successful over the last few years and Jurgen Klopp believes this current group is his best yet.
What’s truly extraordinary about this squad, though, is how well Liverpool are set up for the future. They’re managing this success while simultaneously developing their next great side – and the XI already looks fantastic.
Liverpool’s 25-and-under XI
Goalkeeper
Caoimhin Kelleher is the clear choice as Liverpool’s future between the sticks. He’s already good enough, to be honest, but Alisson is arguably the best in the world. He’ll need to wait his turn.
But at just 23, Kelleher won’t peak for some time. He’ll gradually improve into an outstanding goalkeeper over the next five years – though, Alisson might still be around, too.
Defence
Trent Alexander-Arnold is only 23, despite winning virtually everything there is to win. He’s only getting better and should be one of the world’s very best players over the next five years. We’ll say similar about Ibrahima Konate, who has shown himself to be an elite player at just 22 himself.
And there’s an elite future partnership there with Joe Gomez, who’s only 24. If he can stay injury-free, Gomez should be a world-class defender for the next five years. This is, quite clearly, the pairing to take over from Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip.
Andy Robertson is now 28 and may not be a star in four or five years’ time. Kostas Tsimikas, however, should be – he’s only 25. The Greek left-back has been wonderful this season and can be for a while to come.
Midfield
So here’s the weak spot. Liverpool only really have two outstanding midfielders who are 25 and under – Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott. Both are very, very attacking, however, and not exactly moving into their primes. They’re awfully young.

In defensive midfield, you’d likely pick out Tyler Morton. He’s had some fine games this season but has a long way to go compared to others on this list. Might have to wait and see what Liverpool do in this area over the next 12 months.
Attack
Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz both only turned 25 this season – they’re already sensational players, though. Liverpool can count on them to keep their attack at the absolute highest level over the next five years.
Diaz will sew-up the left side, certainly. Jota could play through the middle or maybe even wide-right. We suspect, after all, that Liverpool could use Fabio Carvalho in their front three if he arrives as reported.
Either way, the Reds have enough here to build a truly remarkable attack even after the current star trio move on.
The future at Anfield
We decided to highlight players 25 and under because they’ll essentially be in their primes over the next five years. That’s the typical length of a contract, after all, and what Liverpool build around.
And as things stand, the Reds are in sensational shape. Their defence looks completely sorted and the majority of the rest is, too. Things are certainly safe up top – though, we might see one more addition there.
Midfield is the only real issue, honestly. We’d expect a new holding player to arrive in either 2022 or 2023 to cover the the short-term future. And with that, Liverpool have their next great side.
