Jurgen Klopp answered a tough question this week – is this Liverpool team his best yet? The Reds’ boss has managed champions.
Is this current Liverpool team the best Jurgen Klopp had managed? It’s an interesting question, given he’s managed a side that won both the Premier League in 2020 and Champions League in 2019.
That may have happened over two seasons but it was essentially the same group of players. It’ll go down as one of the best Liverpool teams in history – an XI that looked unstoppable.

A brilliant team that won it all – though, you can arguably include Joe Gomez over Joel Matip in centre-back. Both played huge roles in Liverpool’s success.
Admittedly, things aren’t all that different in 2022. Gini Wijnaldum left, of course, with Liverpool replacing him with Thiago in the best XI. There’s also a change up top, with Diogo Jota operating as the first-choice centre-forward over Roberto Firmino right now.

So which team is better? Klopp believes there’s only one choice.
Jurgen Klopp on his best Liverpool team
“Yes. Full stop, yes,” said Klopp when asked if this was his best, per Liverpoolfc.com. “Since I am here we always had great teams, to be honest, I loved them all.
“But now we have a bigger squad, high quality, all fit, which is the first time since I am here that it is the case, more experience.
“Quite a few boys are here since I am here, so that means we know much more about each other. Yeah, it’s the strongest team.”

Klopp hits on the real difference right there – a bigger, higher-quality squad. The difference between the best XIs is actually very marginal and there’s a real argument that peak Firmino makes the front-three much better.
But the strength in depth right now is incredible and Liverpool have never really had it. Certainly not in the modern era where they legitimately have the greatest selection of forwards around. There’s amazing depth at the back, too, as well as in midfield.
While this team may need to win more to compete with the best XI of 2019/20, the squad is undeniably superior. And that makes this the best group Klopp has worked with.
