Jamie Carragher picked his all-time Liverpool XI this week. He included three currents stars from Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.
CBS Sports had Jamie Carragher pick his all-time Liverpool XI on Wednesday evening as part of their Champions League coverage. It’s never been an easy task, given the Reds’ history, but we’d have to say that Carra did a good job.
It’s difficult to argue with any of his selections, honestly. He stuck to players he knew well, though – no room for the likes of Elisha Scott, Billy Liddell or Alex Raisbeck, understandably. So with that in mind, let’s have a look at what Carragher went with.
Jamie Carragher picks his all-time Liverpool XI

Goalkeeper: Ray Clemence
Not too much explaining is required here – Clemence is pretty undisputedly the greatest Liverpool goalkeeper. Carragher did admit that Alisson Becker was in the discussion but he couldn’t see past the great man.
Defence: Trent Alexander-Arnold – Virgil van Dijk – Alan Hansen – Steve Nicol
“I’ve gone with Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of Phil Neal, who won four European Cups,” said Carragher. “But I’ve gone with that because I think the influence Trent has on this team is greater than Neal.”
That explains the most controversial choice here. There can be little doubt that Alexander-Arnold will go down as Liverpool’s best-ever full-back once he retires, though.
Alan Hansen and Virgil van Dijk are pretty much certainties at this point, while the Steve Nicol selection raises some eyebrows. Admittedly, Liverpool don’t really have a great history of left-backs and as Carragher says, Nicol was a fantastic defender.
Midfield: Mohamed Salah – Graeme Souness – Steven Gerrard – John Barnes
“Mo Salah has got to go in,” explained Carragher. “He’s a Liverpool legend for what he’s done in this Jurgen Klopp team. He again goes into a position where there’s never been a standout figure on the right-hand side of the attack.”

An easy selection beyond that, really. Souness and Gerrard are possibly the greatest ever captains, as well as midfielders. Barnes was a remarkable player, too, and the finest left-winger we’ve seen.
Attack: Kenny Dalglish – Ian Rush
Not much explanation needed here. Dalglish is arguably the best player in Liverpool’s history, while Rush is the best goalscorer. A simple one.
