Reported Liverpool transfer target Gleison Bremer has hailed Virgil Van Dijk as one of his favourite defenders.
Speaking to DAZN as transcribed by Football Italia, Bremer was asked who his role models are at centre-back.
“I’ve always liked Lucio, but considering the contemporary defenders, I think Virgil van Dijk is really strong,” said the Torino player.
“He suffered a serious injury, but he has everything: physical strength, quality, sense of position.”
Another indication of Van Dijk’s standing amongst his peers. We shouldn’t take for granted how we lucky we are to have a current icon of the game at our club.
Liverpool make enquiries for Bremer
It appears that Liverpool could well be in the market for Bremer this summer. The Brazilian has had an excellent season in Serie A and looks set to make a move in the next transfer window.
Goal reported yesterday that Liverpool have made ‘informal enquiries’ about the 25-year-old. Valuing him at around £21m, Torino are said to be ‘resigned to losing him.’ Inter Milan are claimed to be the favourites to sign Bremer.
It’s the latest in a long line of reports linking The Reds with a move for the defender.
In March, Tuttosport wrote that Liverpool have been following Bremer’s progress for the last three years. Further back, in February 2021, The Mirror claimed that he was Liverpool’s ‘top target’ for last summer.
The Reds opted to sign Ibrahima Konate in the end. A move that looks like being fantastic business from the club. But the rumours about Bremer haven’t gone away.
Reds play their trump card
If Liverpool are to enter into a battle with Inter and other clubs to sign the player, it helps to have the draw of playing alongside Van Dijk.
There’s no real doubt that he is the best in the business in his position at the moment. He provides the the standard that all centre-back’s should be aspiring to reach.
The opportunity to play, train and learn alongside the Dutchman would be a factor any player would have to weigh up.
There is fierce competition for Liverpool in central defence at the moment. But the chance to play with the best in the world could trump any reservations about game time.
Bremer will certainly leave Turin this summer. If Liverpool do decide they need another centre-back, or if Joe Gomez leaves the club, he would be a brilliant option to go for.
