Report: Liverpool interested in signing 22-year-old forward who their scouts think can be the next Luis Diaz

Liverpool believe Darwin Nunez could follow in the footsteps of Luis Diaz, according to reports on Friday. The Reds will face the Uruguayan in the Champions League.

This comes from 90min. They claim Liverpool have scouts watching Darwin Nunez – Benfica’s resident star and the player who fired them into the Champions League Quarter-Finals.

Benfica will now actually play Liverpool, hosting them in the first leg next month, and they can expect Nunez to be the centre of attention. The Uruguayan has been electric this season and it appears the Reds have eyes on him.

90min believe the scouts at Liverpool see Nunez as another Luis Diaz. Diaz has had an incredible start to life at Anfield, of course, matching even the best at the club in several areas.

And in Nunez, Liverpool might find something similar.

Per Whoscored, Nunez has essentially played three different roles for Benfica this season – striker, attacking midfield, and left-winger. He’s scored for fun in all three.

All in all, the 22-year-old has 20 goals in 22 Primeira Liga appearances, with 19 starts. He’s got another four in the Champions League, too, showing that he can bag at any level.

The comparisons to Diaz are certainly very simple. Both are South American forwards who have scored regularly for major Portuguese clubs. Liverpool know full well that such a player can translate their efforts to the Premier League.

And being three years younger, there might be even more value in Nunez. It just won’t be easy to sign him as several clubs see things that way.

West Ham United made a big in January, while Manchester United supposedly want him, too. Both clubs can likely justify the move more than Liverpool, given the Reds boast five elite forwards already.

But we still think this is one to watch. Perhaps Nunez proves too good against Liverpool to pass up. Perhaps there are sales this summer that justify a big-money move.

Either way, Diaz’s success surely fuels Liverpool’s interest.
