Darren Ambrose and Jamie O’Hara have differing views over whether Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold is a better crosser of the ball than prime David Beckham.
Discussing Beckham whilst on TalkSport, talk turned to whether the former captain would get into the current England team.
Ambrose categorically said that he would play Beckham over any one of the current options for England, including the Liverpool man. But O’Hara wasn’t convinced.
“If you’re playing in a 3-4-3. Say Trent was playing right-back, would you have him (Beckham) in front of Trent?” asked O’Hara.
“I would yeah, I’d have him in front of Trent,” replied Ambrose. “Trent’s delivery’s not as good as David Beckham. Come on, you know I’m right there, it’s not. David Beckham was elite, his delivery was elite, that’s what he was known for.”
“Trent’s elite,” came O’Hara’s succinct reply.
It’s an interesting debate, that’s for sure. Both players certainly know, or knew in Beckham’s case, how to put a cross in. But in our eyes, there’s only one winner in this debate, and it isn’t the former Manchester United man.
Lofty comparisons
It isn’t the first time that Trent has garnered comparisons with the legendary Beckham.
After he scored a free-kick goal against Watford in 2018, both Jamie Carragher and Davide Ginola said the Liverpool man’s technique was reminiscent of Becks (Sky Sports Football).
Alexander-Arnold has also been compared to perhaps the greatest right-back of all-time – Dani Alves (Liverpool Echo).
Given the Scouser’s exceptional delivery of the ball, we think he’s more Beckham than Alves. Of course he still has room to improve. But Trent’s passing repertoire is becoming legendary as he redefines his role on the pitch.
Just how good the 23-year-old is becomes even clearer when he’s missing from the team.
Trent is currently nursing a hamstring injury picked up in training after Liverpool beat Arsenal 2-0. Having missed Sunday’s FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest, his posts on social media suggest he will be back in action soon.
