Jordan Henderson has given his reaction to Liverpool’s impressive 2-0 win over Arsenal yesterday evening.
Taking to his personal Twitter page, the Liverpool captain had a one word message to describe the performance: Relentless.
The captain managed the full game as Liverpool rolled onto a ninth consecutive Premier League win. We can’t think of any better words to describe this current run of form.
Beaming Bobby
Much has been made of Jurgen Klopp’s newfound squad depth at Liverpool, particularly the strength in attack. The manager now has a full compliment of attackers back after Roberto Firmino returned after a month out injured.
Klopp decided that he needed to make use of that depth as Liverpool failed to create any clear cut chances in the opening 50 minutes.
But with Firmino and Mohamed Salah being readied, Diogo Jota put Liverpool a goal up. Ahead in the game and still able to bring on the country’s top scorer for the final half hour or so. Absolute luxury.
But it was Bobby, not Mo, who got himself a goal. The Brazilian pounced on a ball across the box from Andy Robertson to kill the game. Robbo posted a message of congratulations to Firmino after the game.
Look what it means
Last night’s win was one of those games where it means more than simply three points. Yes, The Reds moved to within a point of Manchester City at the top of the table and that, at the end of the day, is the most important thing.
But this was seen as one of Liverpool’s most difficult remaining fixtures. Pep Guardiola and City would have been quietly hoping that Klopp’s team would come unstuck here.
Instead, The Reds ran out comfortable winners. The phycological impact it could have on both City and Liverpool is important to note.
Thiago Alcantara certainly knows what it means. Having won seven titles in a row whilst at Bayern Munich, he is better placed than anyone to understand the importance of these kind of victories.
Don’t forget the defence
Finally, Liverpool’s run of successive wins has been built on the solid foundations of an impenetrable defence.
Klopp’s team, led by the outstanding trio of Virgil Van Dijk, Joel Matip and Alisson Becker, have conceded just twice in the nine game winning sequence.
As Van Dijk noted last night, that’s now 17 Premier League clean sheets for the season. No side in the division has kept more.
On we roll. Next up is a trip to Nottingham to take on Forest in the FA Cup quarter-final. Although Forest are a difficult proposition – former Liverpool youth coach Steve Cooper is doing a great job there – it represents a real opportunity for Liverpool to secure a second trip to Wembley this season.
