‘There’s no doubt’: Gary Neville says Liverpool have five players who are far better than Man City’s

Gary Neville believes Liverpool now have a clear advantage over Manchester City in the Premier League title race. It could make the difference.

Liverpool beat Arsenal at the Emirates on Wednesday evening with what turned out to be a fine performance. A nervy first-half preceded a very solid second that saw the Reds comfortably pull away from their hosts.

Thiago provided a magnificent assist for Diogo Jota who finished excellently. Jurgen Klopp then immediately took him and Luis Diaz off, replacing them with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

That proved a masterstroke as Firmino scored soon afterwards after an Andy Robertson cross. It was a wonderful display of squad depth and Gary Neville was quick to mention that on commentary.

In fact, Neville believes it’s a massive advantage in the title race over Manchester City.

“Martin, there’s no doubt that those five Liverpool strikers are a lot stronger than Manchester City’s,” he said on commentary for Sky Sports.

“[Klopp] knows he’s got unbelievable options up front. If he’s not firing for large parts of the game, he’s got sat behind him some world-class players he can bring on, who can go and make the difference.”

Neville then went on to mention how Pep Guardiola lacks the same strength at Manchester City. City drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace on Monday evening, without any substitutions.

“[Guardiola] just couldn’t get the goal and he thought the ones best suited were already on the pitch,” said Neville. “Not the ones behind him on the bench.

“If he’d had Salah and Firmino on the bench Monday night, Pep Guardiola, I’m sure they’d have come on the pitch.”

Liverpool and Manchester City

We wholeheartedly agree with Neville here. It was a huge show of strength with the January transfer window – Liverpool gave themselves a selection of forwards that City simply can’t match.

It’s unquestionably the first time that’s been the case for some time now. Liverpool don’t just boast a world-class front-three but options from the bench that can win any game.

As we saw against Arsenal, Klopp can start with three stars and get a goal. Then he can bring on two more and find another. It’s something we haven’t seen at Liverpool for 20 years.

And it might just swing the title race.
