Sky Sports have provided some more background into Liverpool’s bid to sign Luis Diaz from Porto.
Speaking on Good Morning Transfers via Football Daily, Emma Patton has claimed that Liverpool originally planned to go for the player in the summer.
Due to the interest of other clubs, most notably Tottenham Hotspurs, Jurgen Klopp has ‘accelerated’ his transfer plans.
“A little bit of extra info I suppose. We understand Diaz was actually Jurgen Klopp’s first choice for the summer. So the original plan was to wait until the summer,” said Patton.
“But they’ve kind of been forced into accelerating these plans and making a move now because of course other clubs, like Tottenham, were interested in the player.”
That makes sense. Liverpool were repeatedly said to be unlikely to make any moves in January.
However, it seems as though the player’s desire to move during this window is what has made The Reds pull the trigger
Deal not done yet
Patton did go on to temper the excitement a little though. She said that although Liverpool’s interest is very real, the deal is still “far from done.”
“Just to say as well that this is far from done at the moment. It is quite complex. We know he’s out in Argentina at the moment, he’s with his national side,” explained Patton.
So Liverpool fans shouldn’t start rushing out to buy “Diaz” printed shirts just yet. But it all sounds very encouraging.
As Patton says, Diaz is away on international duty at the moment. Colombia are due to play Peru in Barranquilla this evening.
No doubt there’ll be a few on Merseyside tuning in for the game as Liverpool fans look to get a glimpse of their potential new signing.
