Kinglsey Coman has signed a new contract with Bayern Munich. You might think that sounds irrelevant to you, a Liverpool fan. But it could have positive consequences for Jurgen Klopp’s team.
Bayern have recently been credited with a strong interest in Leeds winger Raphinha (Sky Germany). However that interest was reportedly conditioned on Coman leaving the club.
The French World Cup winner was due to be out of contract in 2023. Bayern were thought to be monitoring Raphinha as an option in case they couldn’t tie their player down.
But with Coman now signed up until 2027, Liverpool could have a clearer path to get the deal done. This doesn’t mean securing Leeds’ star man will be easy. The Brazilian will still command a fee in excess of £60m, with some of his club’s fans wanting as much as £100m for him.
That sounds like wishful thinking. Although Raphinha has proven himself in The Premier League and is now a full Brazilian international, there’s no way Liverpool would go anywhere near that high for him.
With or without Salah
It remains to be seen if the interest from The Reds materialises into a bid. He would certainly fit the profile of a Klopp signing. Unfortunately for fans, Bayern’s situation with Coman could be mirrored at Liverpool with Mohamed Salah.
Both Raphinha and Salah mainly operate in the same right-wing area of the pitch. There are questions over whether the Leeds man is being considered as an option to play with Salah, or an option to replace him.
Fabinho recently said of his international teammate: “The attributes he has are very unique. A left-handed player who can go either way.” This suggests Raphinha is more versatile than we have seen at Leeds. With Bayern seemingly out of the way, Liverpool shouldn’t miss an opportunity to add a player like that to the squad.
