£3m Liverpool report shows almost unfair pressure on academy pair

Liverpool continue to monitor Calvin Ramsay in view of a potential transfer, according to reports. It’s a situation that highlights almost unfair pressure on a current duo.

The Press and Journal believe Liverpool have eyes on Calvin Ramsay. The 18-year-old is shining for Aberdeen right now, assisting eight goals already this season.

That all makes sense, then. As does the weight of competition for Ramsay – there are several Premier League sides with interest here – and Aberdeen’s £3m+ asking price.

You can read our initial impression of the report here.

What does confuse a little, though, is that Ramsay is a right-back. That’s not exactly a position Liverpool are weak in and yet it appears they’re open to a transfer.

It’s a great demonstration of the pressure at Anfield – particularly on young players.

Liverpool look at Calvin Ramsay transfer

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the clear first-choice right-back at Liverpool. He’s the best in the world, in our eyes at least, and still only 23.

But there are two other very talented young right-backs at the club. Neco Williams is having a wonderful season so far for both Liverpool and Wales. Conor Bradley, too, appears to have all the talent in the world and staff are high on him.

Neither, however, have impressed as Ramsay has. They don’t have eight assists between them, let alone each, despite being either the same age as the Scot or older.

But then, they haven’t had the same opportunities – how could they? Alexander-Arnold dominates the right-back position and is first-choice whenever he’s available. Williams and Bradley have to settle for second-string games just to get on the pitch.

So of course, Ramsay shows more at this stage in his career and looks like the more ‘ready’ player. That will interest Liverpool as they look for their best possibly backup for Alexander-Arnold.

It just feels a little unfair. Would Williams and Bradley look as good as Ramsay with similar opportunities? We just don’t know – they haven’t had them. As a result, Ramsay is arguably the better bet as a player.

Williams and Bradley simply have to take every single chance they get, then. Otherwise, they risk losing their place before they’ve ever really established it.
