Liverpool struggled badly vs Leicester City on Tuesday evening, losing 1-0. Here are three players to talk about coming out of the fixture.
The Good
Joel Matip
Brilliant on the ball, even better off it. This was undoubtedly another wonderful display from Joel Matip. The defender is enjoying a fantastic season and right now is some of the best form we’ve seen from him.
The highlight of his performance was undoubtedly his movement in possession. Matip is making a habit of driving forward with the ball, getting Liverpool up the pitch and taking players out of the game. The best example was his 65th-minute drive and pass to put Kostas Tsimikas in behind.
But really, Matip was good in every area here. He defended as well as anyone, winning headers and interceptions every time he needed to.
For us, Matip was pretty unquestionably Liverpool’s Man of the Match.
The bad
Sadio Mane
Just not Sadio Mane’s day at all here. His long run without a goal continues – but it really shouldn’t have. Mane found himself one on one with Kasper Schmeichel but lifted his shot far too high and over the bar.
If he’d just kept it down, it was 1-0 Liverpool vs Leicester. Instead, Mane blew the Reds’ best chance outside of Mohamed Salah’s penalty.
But that wasn’t all to complain about here. Mane also didn’t create any chances for teammates, per Whoscored, and nothing really went right. The 29-year-old isn’t having a good time of things lately – he needs to find form soon.
Diogo Jota
Things didn’t fall for Diogo Jota, either. His problem, though, was that he didn’t really have any great chances in this one.

Part of that was simply a lack of involvement. Jota had far fewer touches than any other forward – a complaint we’ve had for a while. But it appeared that he was really finding himself in that False 9 role, linking play well and getting involved. It just didn’t happen tonight, though.
And after becoming such a dangerous dribbler in recent weeks, Jota didn’t even attempt any tonight, per Whoscored. An off day at an unfortunate time.
