Diogo Jota just put in his greatest performance yet vs Everton

Diogo Jota put in his best performance in a Liverpool shirt vs Everton on Wednesday. The 24-year-old was sensational at Goodison Park.

Jordan Henderson was brilliant against Everton, scoring one and assisting another inside 20 minutes. Mohamed Salah put in a magnificent display, too, scoring two goals and providing the difference in the scoreline.

But neither were Liverpool’s best player on the day. That’s because Diogo Jota just put in his best performance in a Red shirt.

We’ve had doubts about Jota’s ability as a False 9. He’s a wonderful goalscorer, constantly looking to get in the first position to score. That’s not necessarily what Liverpool need from the role, though.

Roberto Firmino, for instance, is world-class in the role because he looks to link with midfield. He creates opportunities for teammates through his all-around game, sacrificing his own goalscoring in the process.

Against Everton, though, Jota put in his best display yet, thriving in the central role like never before.

Just about everything Jota did went well at Goodison. We’ll start with his goal, though.

The forward took up a wonderful position in the box with his back to goal. Receiving a pass from Andy Robertson, he flicked it past Allan and managed to get his finish away without pressure.

That’s remarkably difficult to do. The one thing you don’t expect when you’re marked in the box is to have your finish without any pressure – Jota managed it, though.

But we were ready to call Jota Man of the Match even without his goal. That’s because his all-around game was extraordinary here.

Jota created three chances for teammates here – a figure only Robertson matched in the game. He also completed three dribbles – a figure no one matched – and did it out of three attempts.

He also won three tackles – second-most in the game – and three headers. Jota wasn’t even dispossessed once.

His 49 touches were Firmino-esque, too, as Jota consistently looked to link play. Liverpool couldn’t possibly have asked for more.

Jota was the outstanding Liverpool player vs Everton, even with the likes of Salah and Henderson shining. At the rate he’s developing, the Portuguese forward is going to become one of the best around.
