Liverpool will reportedly give a glimpse of their future vs Leicester City in the Carabao Cup tonight. The Reds could well take a chance.

It’s Liverpool against Leicester City tonight as Jurgen Klopp and co. hope to get through to the EFL Cup semi-finals. Honestly, it’s their best chance at success in the competition for years, with Manchester City already out.

Competing with their ridiculous squad in a competition that usually involves a second-string side is near-impossible. But they’re out – and Liverpool could benefit.

That doesn’t mean, however, that Klopp will put out a strong, first-XI side against Leicester. We’re not actually sure he can.

Covid-19 results continue to take players out of contention, with Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, Curtis Jones and Thiago all missing for that reason. Injuries to Harvey Elliott and Divock Origi rule them out, too, and that has a knock-on effect.

With so many missing players, Klopp can’t afford to risk too many senior Liverpool players. They’re currently vital, after all, as the squad looks incredibly thin with the absences. Games on both Boxing Day and the 28th mean one injury can seriously jeopardise points in the title race.

And that explains why the Mirror reports that Liverpool will play ‘several’ teenagers tonight. It’s expected to be a very young side – one that offers a glimpse of the Reds’ future.

Liverpool go with youth vs Leicester City

It’s hardly a surprise in the Carabao Cup, really. Liverpool tend to play youngsters and rest senior stars as it’s their fourth-priority trophy.

But it does sound as though there will be a particularly high number of youth players tonight. That’s unlikely to translate into a win, if we’re realistic, but it should offer a glimpse into the bright future at Liverpool.

There are plenty of youngsters we’re very excited about right now. There are those already around the senior setup, of course, with Neco Williams looking particularly good recently.

But Kaide Gordon, too, looks very special, as does Conor Bradley and there’s plenty of buzz around Mateusz Musialowski – still yet to make his senior debut. Melkamu Frauendorf is really catching the eye with the Under 18s in recent times, to mention another.

It would take too long to mention them all, though. Liverpool boast potential stars in virtually every position right now.

Liverpool will probably lose this game if they really are going to start teenagers. But the valuable experience could help grow their next generation. At the very least, we should get to see what all the fuss is about.
