Ranking 3 Liverpool August Player of the Month contenders

Now that August has come to an end, we can start thinking about who should win the first Liverpool Player of the Month award of 2021/22.

The Reds have had a very promising start to the campaign. They remain unbeaten and sit third in the table as the international break takes place.

Two wins and a draw with European champions Chelsea has been a fairly satisfying opening three games.

There have been quite a few good performers, but here are the top three for us.

3. Trent Alexander-Arnold

Sneaking into the top three is Trent Alexander-Arnold, holding off competition from Harvey Elliott, Kostas Tsimikas and Naby Keita.

The Scouser is simply extraordinary. At this rate of going, his influence on Liverpool’s game will be the biggest it’s ever been by the end of this season.

Scotland 1-0 Moldova: Billy Gilmour shines again but questions remain ahead of Vienna trip

He has only grabbed the one assist so far, which came against Burnley. He won man of the match that day, and rightly so.

Yet he was also arguably our best player against Chelsea, too. (Well, maybe second best. More on that later.)

Trent is taking over 1.6 shots, 12 long passes, five key passes and seven shot-creating actions per game.

He has also been incredibly solid defensively, with four tackles and interceptions per game.

The absolute best right-back on the planet and still only 22. Scary stuff.

2. Mohamed Salah

The Egyptian King has picked up right where he left off last season.

Three games, two goals, two assists – Mohamed Salah simply has this heir of machine-like inevitability about him.

Four shots, 5.3 shot-creating actions, 4.3 dribbles per 90… Salah’s list of endless phenomenal statistics goes on. He is simply one of the absolute best players in the world.

His opening day showing against Norwich is probably our best individual performance of the season so far.

No, he was not in the game as much as he would have liked against Chelsea. But he still smashed home a high-pressure penalty, as we are now used to seeing.

The 29-year-old will be our main man again this season and should comfortably smash the 20-goal barrier in the league.

1. Joel Matip

The Liverpool Player of the Month for August 2021, in RTK’s view, is Joel Matip.

There was plenty of talk about Liverpool’s centre-backs in the build-up to the new season. Would Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez be ready to go straight in? Would Ibou Konate be thrown in at the deep end?

Many assumed that Joel Matip would start the opening few games due to the fact that he was the fittest of the four.

Well, there is no dropping him now. He helped two clean sheets out of three and could do nothing about Kai Havertz’s header against Chelsea.

Much of the pre-Chelsea discussion was about how Matip and van Dijk would handle £97.5m man Romelu Lukaku, but the ex-Cameroon international had him in his pocket all day.

We have always known how good Joel Matip is, but now the wider world is starting to take note too.

That is why he is the Liverpool Player of the Month for August in our eyes.
