Liverpool might have a couple of injury worries over Jordan Henderson and Thiago. It would explain a reported request by Jurgen Klopp.
Jurgen Klopp has asked Ben Woodburn to remain with Liverpool to the end of the transfer window, per the Scotsman. The 21-year-old has an agreement with Hearts but the Reds want to put it off.
They have games against Burnley and Chelsea before then. Woodburn, it seems, might have a role to play in them.
Now, as good as Woodburn has reportedly been in training, that feels quite strange. We don’t see how he gets into the XI, certainly, nor can we see him getting off the bench.
Unless, of course, there are a couple of injury concerns.
Worries over Jordan Henderson, Thiago
Both Jordan Henderson and Thiago sat out the Norwich game. The captain’s reason seems obvious – he returned to training late.
Henderson got an extended break because England made the Euro 2020 final. That meant he only really had a week of training before the opener and that’s not enough.
There are also concerns about his injury. Henderson didn’t play from February until June and even then, he barely featured for England.
Liverpool won’t want to rush him back.
As for Thiago, he revealed recently that he battled an injury all of last season. It got increasingly worse, too, and he wasn’t able to sprint.
Liverpool will want to be extra careful with him as a result. And that could mean not using him this month.
Thus Woodburn might stick around while these two get up to speed. We still wouldn’t expect the youngster to get games but he could play in midfield if other players went down.
There’s no point taking a risk and leaving the squad light by loaning him out right now. If Liverpool think he can do a job, they might as well keep him as cover for two weeks.
Hopefully, that’s enough time to get Thiago and Henderson back to their best.
