Twitter was full of praise for Naby Keita after his latest performance for Liverpool.
The midfielder played 84 minutes as the Reds drew 1-1 with Athletic Club in their penultimate pre-season friendly of the summer.
Liverpool 1-1 Athletic Club
Liverpool took on Athletic Club in their return to a packed Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
Around 40,000 fans were in the stadium for the game, which is the most that have been inside the ground since Liverpool’s Champions League game against Atletico Madrid back in March 2020.
An issue with the new ticketing system delayed kick-off by thirty minutes, but it was worth the wait for the Kopites.
Diogo Jota opened the scoring after 13 minutes with a lovely finish past Julen Agirrezabala.
Liverpool had numerous more chances throughout the first half but failed to double their lead.
An injury to Andy Robertson on the stroke of half-time also dampened the spirits around Anfield.
Athletic started the second half stronger and drew level through Alex Berenguer.
Again, the Reds had the most chances in the half, but couldn’t find the net.
The game finished 1-1. Yet the workout was more important than the scoreline, so Jurgen Klopp should be relatively happy.
Naby Keita shines again
Naby Keita was once again the hub of a lot of what Liverpool did well in the game.
The Guinean has been one of the stars of pre-season.
He and Harvey Elliott did lots of good work in the No 8 roles, both going backwards and forwards.
Keita won the ball back high up the pitch for Diogo Jota’s goal. His pressing has been one of the most impressive elements of his game so far this summer.
There were numerous superb examples of his press-resistance and close control throughout the game.
It just furthers our belief that a fit Naby is one of the best centre-midfielders on the planet.
Hopefully, this will finally be the season where he stays injury-free and proves this fact to the world.
If he continues with more performances like he showed against Athletic, he will do just that.
Liverpool Twitter impressed with Keita again
Not for the first time this summer, Liverpool fans on Twitter have been raving about a Keita performance.
Love Naby lad, hope he gets more game time during the season— Jake Livi (@LIVIYNWA) August 8, 2021
Honestly through pre season he's looked very solid and he'd be a starter for me if he cab carry on— Jamie Leech:D (@Jamleech92) August 8, 2021
