Today saw a momentous occasion as Virgil van Dijk played his first game at Anfield since the 1st of October last year. The Dutchman started in the centre of defence alongside Joel Matip as the Reds played out an entertaining 1-1 draw. Here are our Liverpool player ratings v Athletic Club Bilbao:
Alisson Becker – 9
The Brazilian showed why he’s just been given a lengthy bumper new deal. The best goalkeeper in the world.
Trent Alexander-Arnold – 8
The Scouser in our team was spraying balls across the pitch with ease, he’s chomping at the bit for the start of the season.
Joel Matip – 8.5
The walking meme was solid as a rock at the back, composed and impassable. A reassuring sight.
Virgil van Dijk – 9.99999
The Dutch icon only missed out on a 10 for missing two sitters from set pieces in the first half. Truth be told it was an average performance by his own high standards but that is incredibly encouraging given how long he’s been out. An honorary score.
Andy Robertson – 8
Andy Robbo was electric as ever but went off with a concerning injury just before halftime. We’ll be sweating on news.
Harvey Elliott – 9
The teenager was arguably the best player on the pitch, he delivered a performance well beyond his young age. He is going to be something special. Man of the Match for us.
James Milner – 8
Millie was assured in the middle and constantly winning his 50s, he’s showing no signs of slowing down.
Naby Keita – 8
After a bright start the Guinean was in and out of the game, whenever he was on the ball he showed us why we still have faith in him.
Sadio Mane – 9
The Senegal star gave his marker a torrid time, his turn of pace and strength were outstanding.
Mo Salah – 8.5
Mo looked alive. Determined and energetic he looks ready for the season.
Diogo Jota – 8.5
The Portugal forward was a livewire and deserved his goal, he’s in for a massive season.
