While Liverpool suffered a 4-3 loss to Hertha Berlin in their latest pre-season game, fans were still left buzzing about Kaide Gordon.
The 16-year-old lit up the pitch in his 27-minute cameo after coming on as a second-half substitute.
Hertha Berlin 4-3 Liverpool
Liverpool were playing in their second full pre-season game of the summer in Austria.
Many regulars started the game, like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.
The likes of Harvey Elliott and Takumi Minamino were also given the chance to impress, while Joel Matip and Ibou Konate got to work on their defensive partnership once more.
The Reds started off sharper than their German opponents, but still found themselves 2-0 down after 31 minutes. Suat Serdar’s second goal was the goal of the game.
However, they went into the break level after goals from Mane and Minamino.
There were numerous changes at halftime and more again after 63 minutes.
Steven Jovetic scored to make it 3-2 to Hertha before the games biggest talking point occurred three minutes later.
This was the return from injury of Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk. The two centre-backs came on for the last 20 minutes in their first games since late last year.
Jovetic scored again in the 80th minute before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain pulled one back with two minutes to go.
It finished 4-3, although the scoreline is not all that important.
The Reds got a vital runout in their preparation for the new season, which is all they wanted.
Kaide Gordon caught the eye again
After an eye-catching performance in the 30-minute game against Wacker Innsbruck and another in the game against Mainz, Kaide Gordon was given another chance to shine against Hertha.
For anyone that has seen him, it is no surprise. This includes Liverpool’s players and staff, who were said to be blown away by the youngster in pre-season training.
The same few would have been impressed by Gordon’s latest showing too.
Sprung from the bench as one of the numerous subs made in the 63rd minute, he took his place on the right flank.
He immediately showed why he is so highly rated.
While he didn’t score or assist, he showed that he simply has the “it factor”.
The way he touches the ball, his game intelligence, his willingness to run. It was all on show in Tivoli Stadium.
Gordon could even have bagged a brace for himself had the ball fallen for him on two occasions.
One through ball to Diogo Jota was particularly impressive, with the Portuguese unfortunately not able to make the most of it.
He does things with the ball that you simply don’t see with 16-year-olds. The intelligence he has to take his first touch out of danger is truly special.
While it is probably too early to bring him up to the first team just yet, we don’t think it will be too long until we see him in the Premier League.
What did Twitter make of the Gordon showing?
Gordon also impressed the fans at home, who made their feelings known on Twitter.
Have to say, really impressed again by Kaide Gordon. For 16, he plays with personality and purpose.— Neil Jones (@neiljonesgoal) July 29, 2021
Has a lovely left foot, good touch and gets himself into dangerous positions regularly. One to keep a close eye on, this season and beyond. #LFC
