Rennes have completed a deal to sign Kamaldeen Sulemana, which could allow for Jeremy Doku to make a switch to Liverpool.
The French side have confirmed the signing of the Ghanaian teenager from Danish side Nordsjaelland on a five-year contract.
Goal report that the deal is worth €15m (£13m).
They beat off competition from Ajax for Sulemana’s signature, while Liverpool were also linked.
Only 19-years-old since February, Sulemana looks to be on his way to the top. He scored 10 goals and assisted five in the Superliga last season.
It is a typically astute piece of business from Rennes.
However, as a natural left-winger, Sulemana will have huge competition for a place in the side.
Les Rennais already have an exciting 19-year-old left-winger at the club in the form of Jeremy Doku.
So, does Sulemena’s signing mean that Doku is on the way out?
Liverpool are on the lookout for a forward this summer and have been linked to the Belgian for years now.
Could this latest development have something to it?
Does Sulemana to Rennes mean Doku to Liverpool?
We know that Rennes are one of the smartest sides in Europe.
They work on a relatively small budget, signing exciting youngsters before selling them on to the elite sides after a few years.
Doku and Sulemana are two fine examples of this. It is clear that both of them will be sold on at some stage.
The reason that we think Sulemana’s signing could mean that Doku is moved on this summer is that they both play in the same position.
Why would a side that does not have much money spend big on a player to play in a position that is already taken?
Of course, one of them could play on the right, while Sulemana has also played as a striker. But they are both at their best off the left.
Liverpool want a winger. They have been linked to Doku for years and we know for a fact that Jurgen Klopp is a huge fan.
Doku even confirmed to Ouest-France that he turned down a move to the Reds a few years ago after talking to the likes of Klopp and Sadio Mane.
Now that Rennes have a ready-made replacement, will they be willing to let Doku go this summer?
His value is high after some exciting Euro 2020 showings. It would make sense for them to let him go now.
There are a lot of moving parts that look to be fitting together.
Don’t be shocked if we hear more about Doku to Liverpool in the coming weeks.
