Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has said that Liverpool will go for a winger and a midfielder this summer.
Last season was a disappointing one at Anfield.
Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino lost form, meaning the Reds were short on goals at times.
With the pair and Mo Salah all around the 30-years-old mark, Liverpool need to think about replacing them.
Meanwhile, Gini Wijnaldum has left the club to join PSG.
He was Liverpool’s most-used midfielder last season, which suggests that he will have to be replaced.
Now, Romano has confirmed that the plan is to recruit in both of these problem areas, with a forward the priority.
Speaking to Anfield Watch, he said: “What I have been told, the strategy for Liverpool now is not going immediately for a midfielder.
“Their priority is to now go for some wingers. This season, they are going to lose, for some weeks, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane because of the Africa Cup of Nations.
“So, they are looking for some potential wingers and then, moving [towards] the end of the market, maybe some opportunity will arrive for a midfielder.”
Romano update promising for Liverpool fans
Considering that Fabrizio Romano has such a good track record, this is great news for Liverpool fans.
The Italian reported news on the likes of Thiago and Ibrahima Konate joining the club months before they actually did.
Simply put, he is the biggest in-the-know in world football.
If he says that Liverpool will prioritize signing a winger or forward before going for a midfielder, then they probably will.
It is interesting to hear that Liverpool see the front three as a bigger problem position.
Diogo Jota and Harvey Elliott are likely to play big roles next season. This is as well as the regular front three.
However, with Xherdan Shaqiri, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino all likely to leave, the Reds will need some more competition up front.
While he may not be a natural winger, as such, Donyell Malen looks to be a serious target.
If they can get the likes of him in the door before going for that No 8, the squad will look fantastic.
Liverpool do have a good number of central midfielders in the squad, but their injury records could be questioned.
Signing an attacker, though, is.
If Mane and Firmino do not recover their form, Liverpool could be in trouble next season.
We will trust Romano. We now fully expect at least two more players to join the Reds before the end of the window.
Let the speculation as to who they will be grow from here on out.
