As we enter into the penultimate round of Euro 2020, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are the only Liverpool stars that remain in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Thiago was an extra-time substitute as Spain scraped past Switzerland on penalties in their last-eight tie.
England will now face Denmark in the semi-finals, while Spain come up against Italy.
It teases the prospect of a Henderson vs Thiago final at Euro 2020, which would be an intriguing prospect.
However, we are more interested in what will happen when the duo are wearing the same Liverpool kit next season.
Thiago and Henderson can form a world-class midfield
Last season, Henderson and Thiago played a grand total of one game together in midfield.
That was against Everton in the Spaniard’s second Liverpool game. He then got injured courtesy of a horror Richarlison tackle, which saw him miss over two months of action.
By the time he came back, Henderson was having to play at centre-back due to the number of injuries in that position.
So while they were on the pitch together a few times, it was just once as part of the same midfield.
Pairing them both alongside Fabinho in the midfield three was likely Jurgen Klopp’s big plan when Thiago was signed. It never materialised last season, so hopefully, we will see what the manager wants in 2021/22.
We can only imagine that it will be the perfectly balanced midfield three.
Fabinho will be at No 6, with Henderson and Thiago playing either side of him.
With the Englishman playing the box-to-box role, Thiago will be afforded the space and time to control the game.
We saw at the back end of last season how he can work as a No 8. Drop deep in possession and dictate the play, then press up off the ball.
The prospect is tantalising for Liverpool fans. We here at RTK cannot wait to see the Thiago and Henderson partnership develop.
