Atletico Madrid have opened talks with Udinese over the signing of Rodrigo De Paul, according to reports.
De Paul has been linked with Liverpool in recent months, but it appears that the La Liga champions may have made the first serious move for the player.
Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Atletico have offered a cash-plus-player deal to the Serie A side. They made a bid of €20m plus centre-back Nehuen Perez.
However, Udinese want around €40m (£34m) to sell the Argentine.
Romano also states that numerous other clubs are in the race to sign De Paul. It remains to be seen whether Liverpool really are one of these sides.
De Paul to Atletico makes sense but could Liverpool still swoop?
If these reports are true, Diego Simeone’s side look likely to push hard to sign De Paul. Liverpool will have to move fast if they actually want to recruit him this summer.
They look likely to sign a midfielder, but exactly who it will be is still unknown.
He scored nine goals and assisted nine more in Serie A in 2020/21. What’s more impressive is that he managed to do it in a poor Udinese side.
De Paul is more attack-minded than the typical Liverpool or Atletico Madrid centre-midfielder. Signing him would be a hint at a system change for both sides.
However, he does have an excellent work rate which probably attracts both Simeone and Jurgen Klopp.
Whoever does get their hands on Rodrigo De Paul will be getting a fantastic player.
