On Sunday night the world of football was shaken to its very core.
A dozen clubs announced that they intended to breakaway to form a European Super League.
The move sent shockwaves around the sport with many believing that it could spell the end of football as we know it today.
The Super League would be made up of 15 founding father clubs, to be joined by five teams each season who had qualified based on domestic performance.

This closed shop nature of the competition was seen as an attack on football.
The move threatened the integrity of the sport and the existence of the pyramid system which is at the heart of the game.
Super League collapse
It didn’t take long for the scheme to implode.
The backlash against The Super League was widespread and venomous.
The Prime Minister came out in opposition, along with pundits, fans and celebrities.
Even James Corden delivered a heartfelt monologue on the subject.
The house of cards collapsed on Tuesday night when Premier League sides began withdrawing one by one.
Chelsea were the first to go with Manchester City not far behind.
By the end of the night all six Premier League sides signed up had withdrawn from the competition.
The sweeping backtrack left the Super League impossible to proceed with.
Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli has now admitted that the competition cannot go ahead.
Jordan Henderson against Super League
On Tuesday we learned that Jordan Henderson had called a meeting of Premier League captains to discuss their response to the Super League.
The skipper scheduled the meeting for Wednesday but it looks as though the assembly is no longer needed.
The captain led the Liverpool players’ dissent against the competition with the squad taking to social media to express that they didn’t want it to go ahead.
In rallying the players against the competition Jordan Henderson made Liverpool playing in the Super League nigh on impossible.
Although the club must’ve been teetering on withdrawing the skipper’s move was a brave one and one which showed true leadership.
