The last year has been a whirlwind for Liverpool FC. The Reds have lifted the Champions League, the European Super Cup and the Club World Cup – they have also opened up a 14 point lead at the top of the Premier League. All of this would have been impossible without skipper Jordan Henderson – England Player of the Year. According to Sam Allardyce, Jordan Henderson is better than Fernandinho at Manchester City.
This has been quite a year for the Reds’ skipper, the England Player of the Year has been lifting trophies left and right – so many in fact that he has developed a signature trophy lift.
We have seen the best of the captain this year as he has had to fill in wherever needed – most recently Hendo has been deployed as a defensive midfielder in Fabinho’s absence.
With much debate surrounding the skipper’s announcement as his country’s POTY, ex-Three Lions boss Sam Allardyce backed Jordan Henderson, saying he is sometimes better than Fernandinho.
Allardyce told The Debate on Sky Sports (14/01/20 at 10:50 pm), “He links the defending and attacking in the middle of the midfield, as does Fernandinho at Manchester City, so everybody raves about [Fernandinho] and Jordan Henderson is equally good if not this season better.”
The ex-Everton manager doubled down as he continued, “He doesn’t get the same praise as Fernandinho does but he does exactly the same job and sometimes better, in my opinion.”
What RTK has to say
Allardyce’s opinion will come as no surprise to Kopites but will undoubtedly cause a stir in Manchester.
Some have touted Fernandinho as one of the greatest holding midfielders that the division has seen. It would be hard to argue that on current form the Brazilian is in the same league as Hendo.
We have been lucky to witness the transformation of the skipper under Jürgen Klopp, he has become a midfield general – he has become a vital cog in a pressing machine that terrifies any opposition. He is miles better than Fernandinho at the moment.
