Liverpool defender Joel Matip is on the cusp of full fitness.
The 28-year-old centre back has been nursing a knee injury since October.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have struggled defensively without the Cameroonian. However as of late we’ve rectified our issues at the back, and this could mean Matip may struggle to regain his starting spot.
Prior to his injury Matip had solidified his starting place alongside Virgil Van Dijk. Throughout last season he was in exemplary form and earned a reputation as one of the worlds best defenders. However, his run in the side was ended in October when he suffered what has proved to be a complex injury. In his absence Liverpool have suffered, even setting an unwanted club record of games without a clean sheet. However as of late our defensive form has turned a corner.
England international Joe Gomez has found great from at the perfect time. After injury issues of his own the 22-year-old became Klopp’s fourth choice centre back. With both Matip and Lovren out he has been forced into the team and has shone alongside Van Dijk. His reintroduction has coincided with Liverpool’s ability to stop shipping goals. The Reds have kept eight clean sheets in the last 10 games. This type of form means Gomez has become un-droppable from this Liverpool team.
Despite returning to training over the past few days Matip will be forced to sit out for a while longer waiting for a chance at first team football. With a heavy schedule until the end of the season it will surely come. But wrestling the starting spot off of Gomez, that may take some time and may not even be possible.
