Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is now immovable from Jurgen Klopp’s backline. The 22-year-old centre back has been in fine form since replacing the injured Dejan Lovren in the Reds first team.
Yesterday’s MOTM display against Wolves proved he is back to his best football. The standout performance solidified his starting spot alongside Virgil Van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool’s defence as we head into the new year.
The year of 2019 didn’t start too well for Gomez. After suffering a fractured leg in late 2018, he was forced to surrender his starting place. Joel Matip took the reins and looked phenomenal alongside Van Dijk.
Once fit again Gomez struggled for game time and form under Jurgen Klopp. Things only got worse when he was caught up in a media storm whilst on international duty with England. After being attacked by Raheem Sterling he was booed whilst playing at Wembley.
Gomez has ended 2019 back at his best despite enduring a torrid year. During the Christmas period he has stepped up and been pivotal for the Reds. The young defender was key as Liverpool became world champions in Qatar.
He then returned to England and shut out the Premier Leagues most prolific striker Jamie Vardy. Yesterday he shined in the Liverpool defence again. He even looked better than the worlds best defender Van Dijk against Wolves.
On more than one occasion he bailed Klopp’s side out of trouble with his insane pace. Liverpool have now kept five clean sheets in six games since Gomez came back into the fold.
Prior to his resurgence at Anfield Gomez was being shut out of the side by Matip and Lovren. Both men whilst top class will struggle to regain first team football when they are fully fit.
Barring some bad luck Gomez will remain in Klopp’s side. Matip and Lovren will have to hope for minutes in the cup competitions when they come around.
