Jürgen Klopp has made choosing the next Liverpool captain impossible

Since the arrival of Jürgen Klopp there has been a dramatic transformation at Anfield. The club has been rebuilt from top to bottom in the last four years. The astounding success that Klopp has had with implementing his philosophy means that in the coming seasons we will have an impossible decision to make: who will be the next Liverpool captain?

Jordan Henderson has been a phenomenal captain for Liverpool. The ex-Sunderland man has had to put up with ungrateful supporters comparing him to the irreplaceable Steven Gerrard. Henderson has been an altogether different captain. He has led by example with his work rate and his defiance.

Only 29-years-old, the England man still has many years ahead of him. However, with competition in the Reds’ midfield likely to intensify in next couple of seasons, he is unlikely to start every game in the future. James Milner is our current vice captain but with him turning 34 in January, chances are the Yorkshireman will also have his role reduced.

This means that in the next couple of seasons we will see the emergence of the next Liverpool captain. With Milner and Henderson likely to see their minutes dwindle by 2022/23, a new vice-vice-captain will become the defacto Reds skipper.

Choosing the next Liverpool captain is an impossible decision to make because of the philosophy that Jürgen Klopp has brought to the club. Every player in our squad gives it his all every time he steps onto the pitch. The team is a well oiled machine, our intensity relies on every player doing their job. There is no man in the team that you can point at and think they aren’t working hard enough.

The three leading candidates are surely Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.

Big Virg is nailed on for a Ballon d’Or, he is a born leader. Andy Robertson’s energy and determination are otherworldly, he covers every blade of grass every game, never letting the opposition settle. Alexander-Arnold is a local lad and he is one of the greatest players of his generation. Which of the three will take on the responsibility when Hendo and Milly find themselves out of the side?
