Three Liverpool players we’d like to see in a new position

Jurgen Klopp has frequently asked players to play a new position since taking over as Liverpool boss. It could be as subtle as Jordan Henderson playing more withdrawn or as out-of-the-box as James Milner at left-back.

With that versatility in mind, here are three Liverpool players we’d like to see Klopp move around next.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – centre-midfield

We’ve written plenty on Alexander-Arnold’s potential in the middle of the pitch. It’s easy to see why, too, as he’s now one of the best passers in the Premier League.

Alexander-Arnold also has the technique for it, though. Add to that his athleticism and you can see why he suits the middle. That’s before you even consider that he played there in his youth.

Jordan Henderson – right-back

If Alexander-Arnold is in the middle, why not Henderson at right-back? The captain is starting to affect that area anyway – as we saw with his incredible cross at the weekend.

He’s got the energy to get up and down, can cross very well, and is happy to do the dirty work. So, switching him and Alexander-Arnold may be an interesting experiment.

Sadio Mane – centre-midfield

Is anyone better at turning with the ball and driving past players right now? It’s a staple of Liverpool’s play – Mane moving everyone up the pitch 20 or 30 yards with a brilliant run out of nowhere.

But perhaps we could see it a little more if Mane had more freedom. You’d hardly put him there to face Manchester City away, but he could really cause havoc in games where Liverpool dominate the ball.

Mane has always been closer to the midfield than Mohamed Salah, too, and he’s a very hard-working player. It could be an interesting way of adding some more goals from the middle.

One last thing

We should say – we’re not suggesting these Liverpool players would benefit from changing position permanently. Things are a lot more complicated than they initially seem, for one thing.

Moving Alexander-Arnold would impact the entire system, while Mane is having a brilliant season from the left. But for the odd game or in certain moments, these are just a few more ways Klopp could utilise his squad’s fantastic versatility.
