England call up can help Joe Gomez get his career back on track

This time last year Joe Gomez looked like he was going to become one of his generation’s greatest defenders. The 22-year-old was looking impassable alongside Virgil van Dijk until he had his leg broken by a reckless Ben Mee challenge when playing against Burnley. A recent England call up can help Joe Gomez get his career back on track.

Last week Gareth Southgate announced his squad for the Three Lions’ forthcoming EURO qualifiers. Southgate’s side will host Montenegro on the 14th of November and play in Kosovo on the 17th of November.

The national side gaffer named four Liverpool players in his squad: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

At the minute Gomez is struggling to get minutes in the Reds lineup. Joel Matip stepped up after Gomez’s leg break and the Cameroonian hasn’t looked back since. Matip’s incredible strides (literally) have made him undroppable from Jürgen Klopp’s side. The ex-Schalke defender has recently been ruled out with injury but Dejan Lovren has stepped into his shoes ahead of JoGo.

The England call up can help Joe Gomez impress Jürgen Klopp enough to warrant another chance in the Reds first XI. Michael Keane has been starting ahead of the Liverpool centre-back of late but the Everton man has been omitted from the latest squad due to poor performances for England.

One obstacle for Joe Gomez could be the return of John Stones to the national setup. The Manchester City defender has missed recent Three Lions matches due to injury. Fingers crossed Southgate recognises how shaky and unreliable Guardiola’s man can be – it would be a bizarre move to replace the error prone Michael Keane with the error prone John Stones.
