Liverpool are running the risk of losing young centre back Joe Gomez; an ever-present player during the first half of last season, which was unfortunately cut short by injury.
Joel Matip has stepped up in his absence and has created a strong defensive partnership with Virgil Van Dijk. In fact, the Cameroonian’s performances have been so impressive Liverpool have reportedly extended his contract.
A 28-year-old with plenty of football left to play, Matip seems to be Jurgen Klopp’s preferred choice.
Gomez could become disillusioned at Anfield with no clear route back into the Liverpool first team. After starting the first game of the season against Norwich, he has been benched ever since.
This lack of game time is clearly effecting his chances with the national side.
Despite earning the call-up from England manager Gareth Southgate, Gomez has not featured in either match during this international break. England have instead opted for a Michael Keane and Harry Maguire centre back pairing.
Gomez, a young player with great talent, can’t afford to let his career be delayed any longer. The 22-year-old has been ravaged by injuries but remains one of the brightest prospects in world football.
If he continues to be sidelined by Liverpool he may look for game time elsewhere.
This England snub will only add to any bubbling discontent with his circumstances at the club. Liverpool must manage this situation or they may lose Gomez sooner rather than later.
