Gary Lineker joins campaign for Alexander-Arnold to play in midfield

According to Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports, Liverpool have “Kevin de Bruyne at right back”. Trent Alexander-Arnold grew up playing centre midfield and it shows. The wing back plays inch perfect cross field balls every game. His passing range is such that Gary Lineker has tweeted saying he wants to see Alexander-Arnold in a midfield role.

The Match of the Day presenter is, like many pundits, an admirer of Liverpool’s Scouse defender. The local lad broke the Premier League record for assists in a season by a defender during the 2018/19 campaign – laying on 12 goals for his teammates.

Trent was quick to respond to Lineker, cheekily suggesting that his future may lie further up the pitch.

What RTK has to say

At least we aren’t kooks. We have been long standing members of the “Alexander-Arnold for centre midfield” campaign. The young Scouser came through the Melwood ranks in the middle of the park before being employed at right back when he broke into the first team.

At the minute the Reds are lacking flair in the middle, they are lacking that killer pass. Philippe Coutinho seems to have taken all the magic with him to Barcelona. Given the outstanding vision and range of passing he has displayed in recent months, we need to be pushing the Scouser into a more central role.

The only issue with moving Alexander-Arnold into centre midfield is finding a replacement. Joe Gomez is a reliable deputy at right back but he offers nowhere near the same threat with his delivery and is destined for a career at centre back.

Maybe the summer transfer window will hold the solution.
