According to many players and pundits, Liverpool have the best defensive midfielder in the world. However, former Republic of Ireland captain Kenny Cunningham doesn’t believe the Fabinho hype.
Cunningham played most of his domestic football as a defender for Wimbledon before moving to Birmingham. He made 72 appearances for the Republic of Ireland and was captain of his nation for three years. Speaking on the OTB AM podcast Cunningham said of Fabinho:
“I’m not totally convinced about him in that holding midfield position, we’re not arguing here if he’s a very good player or not, he is a very good player, but, as a purely defensive midfield player…you’ve got be able to sense danger, slide across the pitch, make tackles, track runners and I don’t think that’s the strongest part of his game.”
What RTK has to say
Utterly bizarre. Declan Rice called Fabinho the best midfielder in the world recently, Jamie Carragher professed that he is the best in the league in his position. Against Spurs he was indomitable. Fabinho is on form as good as it gets in defensive midfield.
Kenny Cunningham has made a fool of himself with his Fabinho comments, particular his assertion that the Brazilian can’t sense danger. Come on! If I had a penny for every pass Fabinho cut out I could afford to clone him.
This weekend could see a masterclass from the Reds defensive midfielder. He will be coming up against one of the best attacking midfielders in the world in Kevin De Bruyne, the leggy Liverpool man will have to be at his best to contain the Belgian – their battle could determine the outcome of the game.
