Fabinho has quickly established himself as one of the world’s greatest and most dynamic defensive midfielders and, speaking after Liverpool beat Burnley 3-0 at the weekend, Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports (31/08/2019) that he believes Fabinho to be “the best in the Premier League in that position”.
Fabinho has gone from strength to strength since cementing his place at the first choice anchor of the Liverpool midfield. The Brazilian has provided a defensive steel in the middle that Anfield hasn’t seen since Mascherano’s heyday. The former Monaco player has also proved that he can turn provider, last season providing a sensational assist for Sadio Mane and recently pinging an incredibly underrated pass to Mo Salah for his wonder goal against Arsenal.
Carragher believes that this dynamism is enough to assert that Fabinho is the best Premier League, adding that “Fernandinho looks like he is fading out of the City team”.
The elephant in the conversation is N’Golo Kante; the Frenchman was unplayable during Leicester’s logic defying title win and has proved immense at Chelsea. However, since the arrival of Jorginho at Stamford Bridge, Kante has seen his role shift from relentless ball winner to box-to-box midfielder – besides, can he pass like Fabinho?
With Fabinho’s growth showing no signs of slowing, he could soon be the best defensive midfielder in the world.
For now though, he is the best in the Premier League when it comes to breaking an attack down and setting one up.
