Reports surfaced in 90Min this week that Joe Gomez is being chased by Arsenal and Tottenham amid rumours he is unhappy with his lack of game time at Anfield. If the defender is unhappy then it is understandable, before his leg break Gomez was immovable from the Reds defence, having forged a telepathic partnership with Virgil van Dijk. With the centre half attracting attention due to his lack of playing time and Trent Alexander-Arnold having demonstrated that he would be adept at playing centre midfield – Jürgen Klopp should play Joe Gomez right back and Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield.
Losing Joe Gomez would be nothing short of a disaster. Whilst he is struggling to get in the side at the minute, he has unbridled potential and could go on to be one of the best centre backs of his generation if nurtured properly. Whilst playing alongside Virgil van Dijk he showed just how good he is and it was a tragedy for him to have had his season cut short.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been showing recently just how important he is to the side creatively. Over the weekend Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher sung his praises on Sky Sports with Carra saying he “passes like a number 10”. The local scouser came through the Liverpool ranks as a centre midfielder before breaking into the first team as a right back. Whilst he has earned a place on the Ballon d’Or shortlist playing in defence, surely his destiny is in centre midfield. Steven Gerrard himself began his first team career as a right wing back.
If Klopp plays Joe Gomez right back and Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield he would be killing two birds with one stone. He would be giving Gomez the playing time he deserves and getting the very best out of Alexander-Arnold.
