The Liverpool defence has looked impregnable at times this year. Whilst the Reds are conceding more goals than they have last season, it is important to remember that we have only just restored the talismanic Alisson Becker to the side. According to a report by London Evening Standard, the Joel Matip injury could have the defender out for six weeks. This setback could be a blessing in disguise for the Reds.

Joel Matip has been undroppable from the Liverpool side since stepping in after Joe Gomez broke his leg last December. The Cameroonian international was named the Premier League Player of the Month for September. Matip has featured in just one of the Reds last five games due to a knee injury, the 1-1 draw with Man United being the only game he managed.
A report by 90Min has stated that Joe Gomez is being chased by Arsenal and Tottenham with the player reportedly unhappy with his lack of playing time. This Joel Matip injury spell could afford Gomez the playing time that he is craving. If the England international manages to force his way back into the side it could save Jürgen Klopp from an unwanted saga surrounding the future of the prodigy centre back.
Joe Gomez will go on to be one of the best centre backs of his generation. He just needs game time, unfortunately for him, his replacement has been in scintillating form. This Joel Matip injury spell could see a long term change in the Reds defence given that Klopp has shown he won’t drop players if they’re on a strong run of form. Matip could have to wait for a dip in performance from Joe Gomez to get back into the side.
