Wednesday night saw Liverpool run out comfortable winners against Belgian champions Genk. The Reds won 4-1 away in the Champions League thanks to a brace from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and a goal each from Sadio Mane and Mo Salah. The Reds were without two key members of their defence for the tie in Belgium. Ahead of Sunday’s visit from Tottenham Hotspur, Jürgen Klopp has provided a Trent Alexander-Arnold injury update and dismissed concerns about Joel Matip.
Local hero Trent Alexander-Arnold missed Liverpool’s midweek win due to a virus. The Scouser has been immense at right back throughout the season but thankfully he wasn’t too sorely missed. James Milner filled in for Trent and had a solid game on the right of defence before switching to the left flank when Andy Robertson made way for Joe Gomez.
It was thought that Joel Matip missed the win over Genk due to a recurrence of a knee injury that saw him miss the Reds last minute win over Leicester City before the international break, however Klopp has dismissed this notion.
During Jürgen Klopp’s pre-match press conference ahead of Spurs’ visit on Sunday, broadcast on the club’s official site, the gaffer told the media, “we just rested [Matip]. He is fine and Trent is fine, we have to see. I haven’t seen him yet. There is no setback, but he was ill enough to not travel. That was not a good sign. He should be fine but I don’t know 100 percent.”
The Alexander-Arnold injury update will come as a huge relief to Kopites. The Scouser’s delivery from wide areas is crucial when facing top class opposition and could make all the difference on Sunday.
