Liverpool have been without Alisson Becker since the very first day of the Premier League season. The Brazilian shot stopper went down in the first half against Norwich and was replaced by Adrian. Following 2 months absence, the best goalkeeper in the world is back in contention as the Reds make the short trip to Old Trafford on Sunday to face Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s struggling side. Man United away this weekend is the ideal return for Alisson Becker.
Adrian has been in strong form whilst acting as Alisson’s deputy. The Spaniard has conceded the joint fewest goals (for keepers that have played every game) in the Premier League alongside Kasper Schmeichel. Whilst the former West Ham United backup has barely put a foot wrong in goal for Liverpool, the Reds will be glad to have Alisson back.
Going into the tie on Sunday, Liverpool are overwhelming favourites. Man United are desperate for points and as such can’t afford to simply park the bus against the Reds. Further to their need for points, when Man United play Liverpool at home, they are expected (traditionally) to beat their bitter rivals. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would come in for a lot of flak from the United faithful should he choose to sit back against the visitors and still get picked off by their superior attacking strength.
The fact that United will be forced to attack for portions of the game and will likely have to play an aggressive defensive line lest they find themselves penned into their own half whilst at their home ground, makes Man United at the weekend the perfect game for Alisson to return in.
The Red Devils have been toothless on the front foot this season, Alisson will have no trouble dealing with their very few shots on target and, with United committing men forward, the Brazilian’s distribution will be key to launching counter attacks.
