When Sir Alex Ferguson took over at Man United his solemn vow was to knock Liverpool off their effin perch. Old Red Nose did just that during his tenure, Man United rose to the height of the game and the Reds faded into mediocrity for some time. What goes around comes around though. Fergie retired at the end of the 2012/13 season. What followed the end of an era was the Red Devils’ own slide into mediocrity, with the Manchester club currently at their lowest ebb. Liverpool are clear favourites to beat Man United when the two sides meet at Old Trafford on the 20th of October, this is a sad sight to see.

Manchester City have become the noisy neighbours from hell for United. The Citizens have stepped out of their sibling’s shadow into the limelight following huge investments made by billionaire investors. It looks as though Liverpool and Man City will be the Premier League rivalry of the present day, picking up the mantle from Man United and Arsenal.
There’s no doubt in the Anfield faithful that a Premier League title is coming. However, the victory would taste all the sweeter if Man United were still competing. To defeat an old foe would be much more satisfying than to best the GloboGym side that billions have bought City.
When Fergie knocked us off our perch, Kopites were praying for the day we snatched it back off them – not the day we manage to edge past some nouveau riche side that nobody cared about a decade ago. Liverpool being favourites to beat Man United is disappointing, this should be one of our title defining games – now it’s just a formality.
