Thiago Silva has been one of Europe’s best centre backs for over a decade. The Brazilian defender has been named in the UEFA team of the year on 3 occasions, has won the Serie A and has 6 Ligue 1 titles under his belt. The defender was part of the Brazilian squad for this international break and he took part in his country’s friendly against Senegal. Silva played the full 90 minutes in the match and had to contend with Liverpool’s superstar winger Sadio Mane. Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Thiago Silva backed Sadio Mane to be in the Ballon d’Or discussion at the end of the year.
Liverpool’s Senegalese winger has been in electric form in the last year. Mane shared the Premier League golden boot for 2018/19 with his teammate Mo Salah and Arsenal’s Pierre Emerick Aubameyang. The forward has started this season strongly too, he scored twice against Newcastle United as well as netting against Leicester City before winning the crucial penalty in the same game.
Thiago Silva told Sky Sports: “Sadio Mané is a world class player. He is almost perfect…with what he has achieved this year, I think he deserves to be in the discussion for the Ballon d’Or”. The Brazilian is undoubtedly referring to Mane’s crucial role in Liverpool’s Champions League triumph. The forward won the early penalty in Madrid and opened the scoring at the Allianz Arena as Liverpool brushed aside Bayern Munich.
It is encouraging to see Thiago Silva saying Sadio Mane should be up for the Ballon d’Or. Liverpool’s electric winger is often in the shadow of Mo Salah given the Egyptian king’s record breaking tendencies. However, this year Mane has stepped into the limelight and he is showing no signs of giving it up. If the winger maintains his form, surely he will be around the discussion for this season’s Ballon d’Or.
