Liverpool have had some great sides over the years. From Paisley’s all conquering side of the 70s to Rafa Benitez’ Champions League winning team of the mid 2000s. The current Liverpool crop are surely up there with the best sides that Anfield have seen. Reds icon Dirk Kuyt has told the club’s official site of his admiration for the team that Jürgen Klopp has assembled.
Dirk Kuyt signed for Liverpool from Feyenoord in a £10m deal in 2006. The Dutchman became a fan favourite at Anfield thanks to his tireless work rate and heart on the sleeve attitude. He managed 51 goals in 208 league appearances before he moved to Fenerbahce 2012. In 2008/09 season, Kuyt was part of a Liverpool side that were pipped to the title by Manchester United by just 4 points.
The retired striker told the Liverpool official site, “We were very close to success. We just missed a small detail to go one step further”. Kuyt believes that the current Liverpool side has what it takes to succeed where the 2008/09 team fell short, he continued, “hopefully this team will do it because, in my opinion, this team now on the pitch is even better than ours”.
Jürgen Klopp’s side offers more than Rafa Benitez’ crop in almost every department, perhaps midfield is the only aspect in which the 08/09 side pip today’s team. There is no comparison between the front line that fell just short a decade ago and the one Anfield watches today; is Albert Riera really any match for Sadio Mane?
